Dolphins in Pipa and Brazil

    Brazil and Dolphins:

Brazil is famous for many things but dolphins are one of the best one! You can see them in quite few places and very often you can even swim with them which is really amazing experience. Dolphins are clever, friendly, funny and always ready to play. But first of all let us tell you some basics information and facts about these amazing animals. Dolphins belong to the order Cetacea family which brakes down into two different groups - baleen whales (Mysticeti) and toothed whales (Odontoceti). So dolphins are small toothed whales (Odontocetes) and belong to the family Delphinidae that counts about 30 species. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) with soft and curves upwards at the back that give this species its familiar, faintly amused facial expression, these dolphins can stay underwater for 8-10 minutes! When a dolphin dives the blowhole shuts completely, otherwise their lungs would fill with water and they would drown.

      Did you know that dolphins...

      • Bottlenose dolphins are warm blooded mammals, they breathe air and the females give birth to live young
      • Gestation takes 12 months and female nurses her calf for 2-3 years.
      • When the calve is born it can weigh up to 30 kgs in first year can grow to seven times their body weight.
      • The length of Bottlenose dolphins can range from 1.5 to 4m and they weight from110 to 400 kgs.
      • Wild Bottlenose dolphins can live for 35-45 years.
      • A female dolphin will mate with many different males. Males will compete aggressively for access to females that are sexually receptive

Where in Brazil you can meet dolphins?

There are dolphins all along the Brazilian coastline, as well as a pink river dolphin that lives in the Amazon. Below we listed few places where dolphins can be seen really close:

Fernando de Noronha - Here the number of dolphins ranges from 50 up to 300. They spend whole the day jumping out of the water in their own special and funny way. It's alwats better to go for a trip early to see the dolphins entering the bay – however they stay at the bay the entire day. Boat trip starts outside the boundaries of the National Park where the chances of seeing the dolphins are quite high. They usually follow the boat for a while. The best time to see the dolphins on the boat trip is when they are either getting into the bay or leaving the bay. There is also the chance of encountering dolphins while diving on the open sea.

Pipa - Baia dos Golfinhos near Pipa is a great place to see dolphins every day, usually in the morning. You can seat on the beach and watch them chasing each other. If you are lucky youcan swim very close to them. There are also many boat trips in Pipa and Tibau do Sul where you can enjoy this friendly mammals swimming around.

Amazon - is another place where you can see some dolphins but here you can see also pink ones as this kind of dolphins lives in the river. Pink dolphins are very pretty but the way they behave is the same as the other ones-always friendly and ready to paly all the time.

São Paulo - on the southermost tip of the state

Rio de Janeiro - If you are very lucky, once or twice a year a group of killer whales get very close to the urban beaches in Rio, a real event that usually makes it to the news.
